7 Fashion Trends for 2020 and Ethical Alternatives

Fashion, Informational

1. Statement SleevesReformation is a great place to find dresses and tops that have dramatic sleeves.

2. Tropical PrintsTonle has a collection of fern print clothing that comes in a variety of colors and styles (my favorite is the cream fern jumpsuit) all under $100.

3. Polka Dots-I love this trend and have already found new and old polka dot pieces to add to my wardrobe. For me, this is a print that never goes out of style. Amour Vert‘s spring collection has multiple polka dot tops.

4. Vest-This is by far my favorite 2020 trend and I am so glad to have kept a tuxedo vest I bought over ten years ago. One of the best places to find vests (look in the boy’s section too) is ThredUp. A search for “tuxedo vest” in the women’s section produced over 500 results. Leave your vest open for an even more stylish look.

5. Crochet- What goes around always comes back again. The best place to find crochet pieces is going to be your local thrift store. You just might have to dig or make a few alterations so that you don’t look like you are wearing a costume.

6. Oversize blazers and Trench Coats– Your local thrift should be your first stop in trying to find an oversized blazer or trench coat. Look at the men’s section as well as the women’s. If you can’t find what you are looking for or want an investment piece, then try The RealReal. The site has blazers and trench coats from designers such as Burberry, Current/Elliott, Prada, and more.

7. Baguette Bags-This is a trend I will not be embracing but since it has come back around you can easily find baguette bags on sites such as Poshmark or eBay. You might even be able to score an original Fendi version if you are lucky or inclined to add that luxury piece to your wardrobe.

Amour Vert (Green Love)

Fashion

My passion for fashion is always reignited by two themes: beautifully made ethical apparel and French inspired fashion. Amour Vert is one of my favorite brands because it blends both themes into gorgeous clothing that isn’t unattainably priced.

Amour Vert makes investment pieces that will last for years. They use organic cotton grown in Texas as well as other sustainable materials such as tencel. Amour Vert also ethically makes most of their clothing in the good ole’ USA. Bonus, when you buy a tee from the company, they plant a tree in North America.

My favorite purchase from Amour Vert was this navy ribbed dress I found on sale for less than $40. You can purchase an even cuter version, with buttons, here.                             (Sorry the photo is so bright and if you look closely you will see the hottest guy ever.)

I love the quality craftsmanship that goes into every piece and the sophisticated patterns used throughout their collections. I appreciate that the brand has a wide variety of striped tops, making it easy to maintain my francophile nature.

Amour Vert has a “good” score on Good on You and is loved by celebrities and fashion editors alike. Some of the pieces I am currently eyeing and wanting to add to my closet are below.

Sweater Weather

Fashion

I am no fan of the cold, which is one of the reasons why I moved to Texas many years ago. However, there is one thing I do enjoy about the winter months…. chunky sweaters. Chunky sweaters are like a cozy blanket. Chunky soft sweaters that feel like a warm embrace from a beautiful fuzzy creature. Thankfully, there are a lot of ethical options when sweater shopping this winter. My Christmas present from my husband was this cotton-wool blend sweater from Pact Apparel.  (Grab it on sale in grey.)

I think the rust color suits my warm hair. This blended sweater is fantastic at keeping me warm (but not itchy) and works well alone on those days when it is a more mild temperature.

I also have my ojos on this gorgeous sweater through ThredUp with buttons on the back.

Here are just a few more sweaters to officially make you a sweater loving convert.

Fashion Fast

Fashion, Informational

Part of being a considerate consumer is being a mindful shopper. That means not shopping when you don’t need something. It might also mean pausing your shopping so that you can determine what you actually need. For those of us that enjoy the art of finding a good deal or updating our wardrobe, this can be easier said than done. Think of this dry spell as a fashion fast with an end date in mind to make your shopping ban more successful.

Fashion fasts can last two weeks, six months, or for whatever duration you set (but try to make it a challenge.) While you are conducting your fashion fast, it is a great time to look through your closet and take stock of what essentials you need to update or stock up on. You might also notice you have styles/colors you never really wear, which probably means that is a style/color you admire but don’t actually like on yourself so make a note to not buy anything else in this category.

I am pausing my own shopping for a few weeks to reassess my closet and I hope to stay on my fashion fast until the end of January. My goal is to analyze my closet so that I can continue to curate a mindful collection as I move forward.

However, I will still be posting so make sure to check back each week! Let me know in the comments if you have previously done a fashion fast or want to start one as well.

My little Rothy’s

Fashion

Shoes made out of recycled plastic. Hopefully you are intrigued by this idea, however, you might also be concerned about the overall look and feel. Luckily, with the innovative and sustainable brand Rothy’s, you don’t have to sacrifice good style for the sake of earth friendly footwear.

Rothy’s are made from post-consumer recycled materials (they have transformed over 30 million plastic bottles into shoes.) From production to the treatment of workers, Rothy’s takes an ethical and sustainable approach. They are a direct to consumer brand so the only way to shop their footwear is through their online shop. They also have a collection for kids too.

I bought my Rothy’s earlier this year and I have already washed them numerous times. They feel like slippers on my feet (even after walking/standing for long durations) and look like new again after a quick wash. I love that the insoles come out as well if you just need to give those a mini clean to get rid of foot odor.

Rothy’s carries flats, pointed flats, loafers, sneakers, and now Chelsea boots. Most recently, the company launched a luxurious collection made out of sustainable sourced merino wool. I currently have the camel point on my wish list. I also really like the navy loafer too.

Fall In Love With Prana

Fashion

I love fall and I am always awed by the richness of the changing colors. I also really enjoy the crisp morning of fall and the warm sunny afternoons. The fall season is the perfect weather for a light pair of pants that can transition easily from cool to balmy temperatures. Prana pants are the perfect bottoms for enjoying nature all day despite shifts in heat. My Prana joggers are breathable and easy to push up when the weather grows warmer; I also really love that the hue matches the beautiful pale leaves.

The best part you ask, Prana is committed to making clothing that has a more positive impact on lovely Mother Nature.  Prana has adopted sustainable initiatives such as avoiding toxic chemicals, using organic cotton, and creating new apparel out of recycled material. The brand also has a collection of men’s and women’s clothing that is fair trade certified. Prana is best known for their sportswear/outdoor wear but they have numerous items that could also be worn in a business casual setting.

My “kickin it joggers” are on sale through REI buy sadly my graphic tee showing my love of trees is now only available for men. However, I really love this tee and here is another great pair of fair trade certified joggers if you prefer a thicker material. Need something to keep you nice and toasty? Check out this cozy sweater!

Fun Fact: As a teenager, I would tell people the color of my hair was “autumn” because of the golden tones and the fact that it would appear darker as the days grew shorter. (Thankfully I didn’t shed my hair with the leaves.)

Threads For All Weather

Fashion

The fall weather can be unpredictable so it is a wardrobe necessity to have versatility. Luckily, Threads 4Thought has a variety of apparel to keep you stylish during fluctuating temperatures. They are an eco-friendly and sustainable clothing company for men and women (now kids too.) The company was founded in 2006 with the principle of making fashion that has a minimal environmental impact. I have supported this brand for years and can vouch for the durability of their apparel.

You can shop this brand online or through Nordstrom Rack. REI Outlet also has a selection of Threads 4 Thought apparel at a discounted rate. I love that Threads 4 Thought is now carrying Veja shoes as well.

Sadly, they no longer make dresses but you can still find a limited selection of dresses in their sale section.
